I’ll happily confess that I’m completely smitten with my two dogs. To keep them cozy, I’ve scattered several dog beds around different rooms in my home, ensuring they always have a comfy spot to unwind. My house is filled with dog toys, water fountains, treats, harnesses, life jackets—yes, I even bought a life jacket for my pup—and a whole lot more dog gear. But when it comes to pampering my furry friends, I draw the line at dog food. I admire those who whip up chicken, rice, and veggies for their dogs every night, but that’s not me. While I want Rufio and Ace to eat healthy, I’m not looking for extra hassle. You might recall The Farmer’s Dog from their tear-jerking 2023 Super Bowl ad that went viral. So, my pups Rufio and Ace decided to put The Farmer’s Dog to the test to see if it lives up to all the buzz.

What is The Farmer’s Dog?

The Farmer’s Dog is a premium fresh dog food brand, delivering vet-designed meal plans crafted from human-grade ingredients. Established in 2015 by two passionate dog enthusiasts, the company aims to provide healthy, convenient, and high-quality dog food. The Farmer’s Dog focuses on offering nutritious, budget-friendly options that meet strict safety standards, ensuring easy access and reliable delivery for pet owners.

How I tested The Farmer's Dog

I received a 14-day supply of dog food for each of my dogs. To ensure a smooth switch from dry dog food to The Farmer’s Dog, I took extra care with the transition, extending it beyond the recommended one-week period. I began with a mix of 75% dry dog food and 25% The Farmer’s Dog, gradually increasing the proportion until both dogs were fully transitioned to 100% The Farmer’s Dog. The meal plans for my dogs featured a variety of recipes, including beef, pork, and turkey. The suggested feeding amount was half a package per day for each dog.

What I liked about The Farmer’s Dog

My six-year-old Boston Terrier, Rufio, is like a walking garbage disposal—he’ll eat anything, even if it doesn’t sit well with him. This often leads to messy and unpredictable bowel movements, which, frankly, I’d rather not deal with. However, after just a few days of switching to The Farmer’s Dog, I noticed a remarkable difference. Rufio’s trips to the backyard became (TMI alert!) regular, solid, and easy to clean up—honestly, a game-changer. Both dogs clearly loved their meals, and I could tell they felt more satisfied afterward, in a healthy way. Rufio, in particular, toned down his intense mooching behavior, which was a welcome bonus.

I saw more noticeable changes in Rufio, likely because he’s older and more food-sensitive. Ace, my younger pup with boundless puppy energy, didn’t show as big a shift—probably because he’s already trained not to beg for table scraps. Still, he seemed extra excited at mealtime compared to before.

What I didn’t like about The Farmer’s Dog

The slim, compact packaging is ideal for efficient freezer storage, but it poses challenges when squeezing out the contents during feeding. I attempted to use a utensil to scrape out the remaining bits from each packet, yet it often felt like I was either wasting some or putting in too much effort before giving up. Additionally, the packaging isn’t resealable. While a takeaway container is provided to store an opened packet in the fridge, I would have preferred a design that allows for secure sealing, particularly during the initial transitional week when I stretched one packet over several days.

How does The Farmer’s Dog work?

To begin with The Farmer’s Dog, you’ll start by completing a brief quiz that asks about the number of dogs you own, their breed, age, weight, dietary restrictions, activity levels, and past diet. Once the quiz is done, The Farmer’s Dog will create a tailored meal plan for your dog, including recommended recipes and weekly pricing. Your dog’s meals are crafted using USDA human-grade fresh ingredients and come in pre-portioned packs—just open and serve. The refrigerated deliveries are scheduled to fit your needs and arrive in eco-friendly packaging. Be sure to store the packs in your freezer and thaw one out 12 hours before feeding time. After thawing, each pack remains fresh in the fridge for up to four days.

How much does The Farmer’s Dog cost?

Meal plans typically range from $2 to $12 per day, with delivery options spanning one week to three months, including free shipping. Currently, The Farmer’s Dog is providing a 50% discount for first-time customers on their initial box of dog food. For two weeks of meals from The Farmer’s Dog for Rufio and Ace, the original cost would have been $119.30. However, with the 50% first-box discount, the total drops to $63.56. That works out to $31.78 per dog for two weeks, or just $2.27 per day. By comparison, a 40-pound bag of dry dog food costs $60 and lasts slightly under a month, breaking down to approximately $2.30 per day per dog for our two pups.

What ingredients are in The Farmer’s Dog dog food?

The Farmer’s Dog outlines every recipe on their website and in a product card sent with your dog food delivery. The recipes vary and can include the following ingredients:

  • Meats: Whole beef, turkey, pork, chicken, and a beef and chicken liver combination
  • Fresh vegetables: Carrots, green beans, brussels sprouts, and broccoli
  • Fiber-rich foods: Chickpeas, sweet potatoes, and lentils

Where can I buy The Farmer’s Dog dog food?

Right now, you can only shop The Farmer’s Dog on the brand’s website to guarantee your personalized meal plans are delivered in refrigerated and environmentally-friendly boxes.

Is The Farmer’s Dog worth it?

Yes! I think The Farmer’s Dog is worth it. Both my dogs loved it and it seemed to improve their digestion. I have plenty of freezer space, so storing the food wasn’t an issue, but I could see how storing several packages of dog food might not be ideal for everyone. The cost was comparable to our usual dry dog food, so as long as you have the space, I would highly recommend The Farmer's Dog!
